First AG Batch...

Well, I finally made it to All Grain. I did a very simple wheat recipe, and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

I did miss my OG and I was short by about a gallon for volume, but it was a great learning experience, and I truly do think it will help me brew better beer.

I did learn a lot thru my first experience.
  • I need a bigger brew pot. 32qt. is not enough to get a good rolling boil with 6.5/7 gal. of wort.
  • It wasn't nearly as daunting as I thought it would be. A few more times doing this and I should have my techniques down.
  • Charlie is right with the whole RDWAHAHB. Once you suck it up, put your fears aside, once you get into it, you're on your way!

The recipe is as follows
6lbs. Wheat
4lbs. Briess 2-row barley
.75oz Mt. Hood Hops(Pellets) at 60 min.
.50oz Mt. Hood Hops(Pellets) at 15 min.
I used about 1/3lbs of rice hulls for sparging.

Hydro sample tasted pretty good. I'm really of a mixed mind as to if I want to make this a cherry wheat, or just leave it as is. At least I have a week or so to decide!! Pitched a vial of WL051 California V Ale Yeast and after 12 hours it's doing it's thing!!!

Getting Ready for AG

Well, I've been slowly but surely getting the things that I need to make the leap into AG. I just converted a picnic cooler and now I just need a free day to brew!!! Picnic cooler was actually pretty simple to convert. I used a 1/2 x 2" Brass nipple, some 3/4" flat washers, a plastic nut, I made some of my own gaskets with some leftover gasket material I had, and then of course the SS braided line. It's been checked for leaks and I'm good to go there. I'm really excited about doing my Cherry Wheat in AG!!
